Re Torture: Pain Breeds Lies 12.01.07
Dear MP Network,
This month's post has already been published by Alternet on November 30th,
in their Rights and Liberties Section, which can be accessed by following
the link below:
http://www.alternet.org/rights/69363/
My short summary of the piece is that the Mukasey nomination result shows
that we progressive activists must take on the job of educating the public
on this issue now. The most powerful argument for that part of the American
public still supporting torture is that torture actually threatens our
safety, because it leads to lying, not valid information, whether the liars
are trapped innocents or seasoned al Qaeda agents.
In the piece I suggest soundbites, possible visual scenarios, and provide
resouce links for the job we face. Additional resource links left out of the
article are: http://86Days.amnestyusa.org and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series). The latter concerns a FOX
network television show called '24,' which, I'm told, features agents
torturing terrorism suspects who then tell the truth about their plans,
something seasoned intelligence professionals say does not happen in real
life. According to Wikipedia, '24' is slated to become a major motion
picture soon. Friends, this is a VIP double crisis--re our national security
and for our American civil right to dissent. (See also Naomi Wolf's new
book, The End of America for where this '24' tactic might be aimed. . .).
Please pass this on!
